Vanguard Specialty Coffee Co is situated on Princes St just up from the exchange. Paid parking is available outside the café as well as in the nearby streets. It’s accessible with a pushchair and has plenty of space.

There is adequate seating situated around the café with the counter centrally placed.

Vanguard is very popular among local workers popping in to grab their caffeine fix or just making any excuse to have a "meeting" in the relaxed and spacious cafe. However, don't let this put you off visiting as this café also caters for children, with a couple of free standing highchairs and a toy basket in one of the corners, ideal to keep the kids entertained.

Vanguard is a Dunedin based specialty coffee company that prides itself on sourcing their coffee from small scale farmers in Columbia or obtaining their coffee from fair trade importers.
Their delicious cabinet and menu food is made with locally sourced produce, organic milk and free range products.

Their coffee beans are available for purchase online or in store and can be ground to your preference. The friendly service and awesome coffee made for an enjoyable café experience with the little ones in tow. Definitely one to add to the list

If you find yourself in North East Valley and in need of a quick and easy BUT healthy takeaway option Beam me up Bagels are a real bagel with a tasty kiwi style. Various coffee, tea and iced coffee options with  additional charges for organic soy and almond milk. Bench and small table area is available, but with the botanical gardens so close, why not have a fun picnic lunch :)

Each bagel is hand-rolled and then boiled in a Dunedin's own malt blend before being baked in a hot oven, this is what gives them their delicious taste and signature chewy texture.

They are sold unfilled as a single item $2 each or by the half dozen. If you would rather grab and go, bagels are offered toasted and topped with delicious and  generous spreads, prices range from $3-$12.

Beam me up Bagels are a proud supporter of other local producers at the Otago Farmers market with a menu featuring smoked salmon, fresh market greens, award winning cheeses, local honey & jam along with free range bacon & ham.....Their meat is always free range, produce is ethically farmed, fair trade and where ever possible local and organic.

The hard part will be choosing which bagel you want to eat first!

As well as being in NEV you  can also find Beam me up Bagels at the Otago Farmers Market every Saturday morning from 7.30 am till 12.30 pm, with freshly baked bagels to take home or toasted up with their delicious range of toppings.

Review
Located 12km north of Oamaru, Riverstone Kitchen is the perfect place to stop with the family. We drove there for lunch with the family while spending the long weekend in Moeraki.

Lunch, dinner and kids menus are available, with any dietary requirements catered for on request. They have a great selection of craft beers and award winning wines, perfect for those special occasions.

Meal prices are at the higher end but well worth it for the higher quality of food made with their freshly grown or locally sourced produce. Jams and preserves are available for purchase in the restaurant.

An indoor toy area inside the restaurant is idyllic for entertaining the smaller kiddies while waiting for the food to arrive. Riverstone Kitchen has stunning grounds with a castle being built on the adjacent site that is great for the kids to gaze at. There is also plenty of outdoor space and gardens for the kids to run around in as well as the amazing outdoor playground and fort which is appealing to those young at heart as well as the kids!!   Additionally on site is the Riverstone Country gift shop  consisting of numerous sheds which is well worth exploring.

This is a high quality restaurant that has thought of everything for the kids. Definitely worth stopping here next time you are in the area or making the trip north one weekend. Make sure you prebook for lunch or dinner so that you don't miss out!
Master Benji loved the playground as did his Dad & Grandfather ;)
